Are you a middle manager unable to direct your staff? Are you a supervisor who feels totally out of your depth when conducting staff meetings?
In my business I see middle managers and senior executives, who are highly skilled in specific areas. Their previous success leads to promotion. Their responsibilities change.
Suddenly, they are required to show leadership skills they may not possess. Assuming responsibility for a team of staff, they are expected to conduct performance appraisals. They have to issue clear guidelines for staff development. They have to manage people.
Often, people management is not where their passion lies. They may be skilled artists, designers, or sales people. But when it comes to overseeing a staff team their enthusiasm wanes.
Middle managers often have to resolve staff conflict. They become frustrated by group tensions. It all involves negative energy. There may be a performance management system in place, but is it ever used effectively?
I have a client who is an artist. She has built up a very successful business. During our discussions it has emerged she resents the time she has spent managing people who are necessary to keep the business running smoothly.
I have helped her see that she doesn’t want a leadership role. Her creativity lies in her painting. That is her passion. She is much better off delegating the day-to-day management of her business to someone else.
At Kool Results we offer training to small groups of line managers. They attend a one- or two-day workshop, where they receive the coaching & training they need.
So often, employees are sent on training courses, only to return to the work place and put their notes in the bottom drawer. “We’re too busy to use what we’ve learnt,” they say. They never refer to their notes again.
By training individuals we offer dedicated support. We help middle managers to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Learning about leadership helps them to empower their staff. They integrate what they have learnt into the workplace, creating an organisational culture reflecting commitment, energy and motivation.
The result is an employee who feels valued. By understanding what motivates people, managers can set higher goals to achieve potential that was not previously tapped.
You get the best out of your staff. You create commitment. Keeping staff means you also keep talent.
