Have you got your list ready for the count down to Christmas? Both at home, and at work, a list can order the chaos which inevitably accompanies the run up to the festive season.
Traditionally, organisations find the weeks before Christmas frantic. This is when you are trying to fit in lunches with clients, drinks with colleagues, and those networking events needed to ensure the growth of your business. And then you have to think of your strategy for next year.
It is important to get the work/life balance right. Identify those functions which are valuable to you, and merit your input. Have the confidence to say no to those which will provide you with no tangible benefits – not just in a business sense, but also from a personal point of view. If they are people whose opinions and values you do not respect, don’t squander your energy on them.
There are twenty five days to go! Start now! Have you worked out a strategy for keeping in touch with your clients over this period? Will you be sending Christmas cards, or having a festive function? How do you ensure that your clients return to you in the New Year? Try a special offer, or a voucher for them to spend with you in February. They need an incentive to stick with you after the break.
Don’t forget to seek outside help. At home and at work suggest a Kris Kringle – that way each person is able to put a lot more time and effort into one present. Make it easy for yourself - shop online – not just for groceries, but also for electronic items, books, and CDs. Order by 10pm, and in many cases the goods are delivered to your door the next day. And no messing around looking for a car park!
One of my clients is travelling overseas for Christmas. She has ordered books, DVDs and even a crate of wine to be delivered to her destination address. She is saving herself time, and also space, in her suitcase. She can even get most of the presents gift wrapped.
Don’t neglect your business over this period. Plan properly, and you will survive the pre-Christmas rush. Implement strategies now which will ensure you start the New Year up and running. And remember to look after yourself. Put things in perspective, and don’t forget to have fun along the way.
“There is no ideal Christmas; only the one Christmas you decide to make as a reflection of your values, desires, affections, traditions.” Bill McKibben.
Have a Happy Christmas, and a fabulously healthy New Year!
