You love it, or you hate it! You are either totally convinced by the propositions in Rhonda Byrne’s book, The Secret, or you are a cynic who sees it as the next celebrity hype!
But it raises some interesting issues. Do you go around saying that your cup is half full, or half empty? Do you have the power within you to make your dreams come true?
Staying positive, and being an optimist makes a huge difference to your health, your attitude, and your success. If you have the ability to overcome adversity, to respond well when things go wrong, you are much more likely to achieve in this world.
This can be easily translated to your business environment. When you are leading or managing people, they will emulate your positive attitude. You will build productive teams who reflect your affirmative style. Too often we see an employee humiliated and chastised at work. The outcome is an unhappy, unproductive, and, occasionally vindictive individual. But if you praise good results, and offer help and encouragement through difficult times, the individual flourishes, and begins to achieve success.
We may not be able to control external events, but we definitely are able to master our own thoughts and responses. We all have friends who carry a lot of baggage. It might be a failed relationship, a redundancy, or a missed opportunity. It is their choice whether they let it go, or whether they let it drag them down. They have the power to learn from the experience, and to embrace a more positive future.
It is important to offer support initially, but do not allow yourself to be sucked in by people who persist in negativity. Once you have proffered the helping hand, move on. You will learn on this journey too, and it is important to make sure you have established firm boundaries with these people. The next time they appeal to you, you will understand how far you should go before you are at risk of becoming merely a prop or a sponge for them.
Seek out vibrant people who think strategically, and who are willing to tap into external resources if they see a need. Positive people can acknowledge when they require help, and they embrace it in their desire to move forward.
Paulo Coelho’s novel “The Alchemist” deals with similar themes. He illustrates the transforming power of our dreams, and the importance of listening to our hearts.
Be assertive. Make sure you are living your life with integrity, being true to yourself and your aspirations.
