I have just returned from the International Coach Federation Australasian Conference in Melbourne. The guest speaker was Sharif Abdullah who was truly inspirational. His philosophy mirrors a lot of what I do already, but I know I can do so much more.
The theme of the conference was Creating the Future Today. We were urged to “think BIG and to use our skills to address BIG issues such as sustainable resources, social inequalities and global disharmony.”
You can do this with your business today. Think inclusive - everything you do must have a positive impact on each member of your organisation. Look at the bigger picture. Make sure that the overall direction of the business, whilst still profitable and successful, is also focused on what is good for humanity as a whole.
Take responsibility for what happens in the wider world. Don’t look to blame without, but look within. Become a role model. As soon as you put your vision in motion, and change your attitude, you begin to raise awareness in others.
Become the first small voice of change. Speak up. Emphasise what is important and how, together, you can make a difference. “Let's remember we are all in this together - we are all citizens of planet earth .... your vision for your business must begin with the end in mind.” Sharif Abdullah.
Seek to change from within an organisation. Don’t become polarised or aggressive in your stance – this never wins anyone over. Keep needling away and you will bring people around to your point of view. For instance, how long did it take your family to become water conscious? Maybe it started with you turning off the tap when you were cleaning your teeth, or putting a bucket in the shower. Soon, it becomes natural behaviour which the rest of the family adopt.
Companies are becoming more sustainable. They start by switching off lights in unused rooms, or turning the heating down by one degree. Gradually, each staff member follows this example, and it becomes common practice.
When we have one voice and shared values we are inclusive. We have the power to change the attitudes of local, state and even federal governments.
As Sharif Abdullah said, “If you drive your car as if everyone around you was your best friend, then attitudes will change.”
