Everywhere I turn I meet people who are tearing their hair out, complaining that they do not have enough time! Time to tie up the loose ends in business before the end of December; time to plan how to start the New Year; time to buy Christmas presents; time to enjoy all the Christmas festivities. If you plan strategically throughout the year, you will create more time for your business and yourself. You will be in control, so that, when the unexpected deadline does arise, you will deal with it without stress and panic.
Brad is an exciting entrepreneur, whose new company is very successful. He called me in recently to help sort out some staff issues, where there are clear personality clashes. Instead of addressing these problems six months ago, when they first surfaced, he put off tackling the problem. As a result, his staff’s inability to work together has affected productivity. The unresolved issues are a drain on Brad’s time, just when his pre-Christmas orders are coming in.
Do not procrastinate. It is a false economy! Face up to problems as they arise. If you diffuse an awkward situation immediately, you prevent it from escalating. Sometimes it’s helpful to have an independent observer come in to address the problem. They assess staff dynamics with emotional detachment and are able to facilitate a discussion between the aggrieved parties.
When we are busy it is very easy to let things go which seem less important –the monthly newsletter; the regular catch up with staff for after work drinks; the appointment with your leadership coach. All have their place. The newsletter is an important marketing tool. Your staff value the opportunity to meet casually with the boss and it can engender loyalty. A coach helps you plan strategically by acting as a sounding board, giving advice in a logical and clear way.
When you look at your business plan for the year, schedule in time not just for your clients, but for your business. Make sure that, when you close the office door in December for the summer break, you have strategies in place to kick start your business in the New Year.
Finally, make the time to look after yourself. Don’t ignore your fitness regime – it’s important to keep up your energy levels. Keep that space you have created for yourself throughout the year, whether it is a twenty minute walk on the beach, a half hour soak in the bath, or reading the paper in your lunch break – which, of course, you will be taking.
And remember – it’s Christmas! Take time to celebrate with your family and friends!
